Boris Johnson Wanted A Coronavirus Injection In His Arm To Reassure The UK: Ex-Aide

According to his former chief adviser, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson devised a crazy plan to prove coronavirus was a "scare story" by injecting himself with the virus on live TV.

Johnson dismissed COVID-19 as “the new swine flu” in February 2020, a month before the virus was declared a pandemic and Britain imposed its first lockdown, Dominic Cummings told lawmakers.

“The prime minister regarded this as just a scare story,” Cummings testified, blasting the government’s response to the pandemic. He added that Johnson’s aides saw the prime minister’s attitude as, “It’s swine flu, don’t worry about it. I’m going to get (Chief Medical Officer) Chris Whitty to inject me live on TV with coronavirus, then everyone realizes it’s nothing to be afraid of.”

Cummings added, "That would not help actual serious planning."

It was unclear whether Johnson's comments were intended to be humorous.

The postscript, however, was no laughing matter: a month after making the dismissive remarks, Johnson contracted COVID-19 (inadvertently) and nearly died.

Some Twitter users drew parallels between COVID-19 and another world leader who downplayed it.

Trump wanted to be injected with bleach, while Boris Johnson wanted to be injected with COVID. Does he understand how this virus infects? — David Hale (@Hokieman78) May 26, 2021

Trump injecting bleach is less insane than @BorisJohnson injecting cocaine. — Alberto (@Albertoweaver84) May 26, 2021

PM suggested Chris Whitty inject him with Covid live on television to prove the virus wasn't that dangerous. It appears that Boris Johnson set the standard for the most ridiculous idea to combat Covid, one that even Donald Trump couldn't match — Stephen Latham (@stephen_latham) May 26, 2021
