Critics Say John Cena's Apology To China Demonstrates 'guiltlessness.'

Critics pounced on movie star and pro wrestler John Cena on Tuesday after he apologized to China for referring to Taiwan as a country in an interview.

Cena told Taiwanese media that Taiwan would be the first "country" to see his new "Fast and Furious" film "F9," prompting outrage in China, which considers the self-ruled democratic island nation to be its own territory, according to The Associated Press.

“In one interview, I made a mistake,” Cena said in Mandarin in a video posted Tuesday to Chinese social media, according to the Associated Press. “I need to say now that this is very, very, very, very important. I love and respect China and the Chinese people. I’m very, very sorry. As for my mistake, I truly apologize.”

American business efforts to appease China because of its lucrative market are nothing new. In 2019, Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey apologized after tweeting his support for democratic protesters in Hong Kong, but the damage had already been done.

On Twitter, Cena was chastised by journalists, politicians, and others; commentator Keith Olbermann chastised him for his "gutlessness," and Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) called his apology "outrageous."

The John Cena apology is outrageous, but it is part of a much larger problem: Hollywood has repeatedly prioritized profits over truth, morality, and patriotism by succumbing to Chinese government censorship.https://t.co/GOWg1UiSEW — Chris Murphy (@ChrisMurphyCT) May 26, 2021

Because much of Hollywood operates in fear of Beijing, many of its blockbuster films rely on the mainland Chinese market. https://t.co/2mPcNAT6R3 — Jim Sciutto (@jimsciutto) May 25, 2021

Grow a spine, John Cena. Taiwan is a country. The facts will not change because the Chinese despise them. — Sonam Mahajan (@AsYouNotWish) May 25, 2021
