ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) — Former Virginia
Sen. John W. Warner, a former Navy secretary who was once married to Elizabeth Taylor
, died at the age of 94 on Wednesday, according to his longtime chief of staff.
Warner died of heart failure at home in Alexandria, Virginia, on Tuesday, according to his wife and daughter, Susan A. Magill.
“Until his last days, he was frail but full of spirit,” Magill said.
Warner, a Republican
, was elected to the Senate
in 1978 and served five terms before announcing his retirement from the Senate in 2007.
Warner, a former secretary of the Navy, was chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee for a time, and he had an independent streak that occasionally irritated more conservative Republican leaders.
Warner was Taylor's sixth husband, and they were married from 1976 to 1982.
