'Will Never Trust Pants Again,' Says Lil Nas X Following 'SNL' Wardrobe Mishap

Lil Nas X is clearing the air after splitting his pants on “Saturday Night Live” over the weekend, assuring fans that the wardrobe malfunction was not staged.

During an appearance on “The Tonight Show” on Monday, the two-time Grammy winner recalled what was going through his mind during the viral moment, which occurred near the end of his debut live performance of the No. 1 smash “Montero (Call Me by Your Name).”

“I'm pretty much going down the pole, doing my little sexy drop down, and boom! I feel air,” he told host Jimmy Fallon, “and I'm like, 'OK, there's definitely a breeze going on,' and I also felt some popping going on while I was down there.”

Of course, Lil Nas X couldn't stop the "SNL" broadcast, so he held his hand over his crotch for the rest of the song to avoid a Lil Nas X-rated moment.

“You know what the worst part is? At the end of the performance, the dancers are supposed to touch and tug on me, and they were tugging on my pants,” he explained.

Though the Atlanta rapper and singer now laughs about it, the wardrobe mishap apparently weighed on his mind as he prepared for his late-night television appearance. As the interview aired, he joked on Twitter that he'd chosen a red tartan skirt for his "Tonight Show" appearance because he "will never trust pants again."

In another interview on “The Tonight Show,” Lil Nas X shared “SNL” rehearsal footage of him performing an acrobatic dance move that he had removed from the final performance due to the pants rip.

“I want everyone who thought it was a publicity stunt to see that,” he jokingly said.

Aside from his newfound disdain for trousers, Lil Nas X expressed his eagerness for fans to hear the entirety of his upcoming album "Montero."

“My entire life has led up to this moment,” he said. “It’s honest. It’s 100% me. I’m exploring my sexuality, myself. It’s like a coming-of-age story.”
