Ammon Bundy Has Filed His Candidacy For Governor Of Idaho.

Ammon Bundy, the anti-government agitator who took over Oregon's Malheur National Wildlife Refuge with a band of followers in 2016, has filed to run for governor of Idaho.

Bundy isn't registered to vote and has been barred from entering the Idaho state capitol for a year after being arrested twice in two days there last August. Although he hasn't decided whether to run, Bundy told NBC News that he wants to start putting together a campaign organization.

“The people of Idaho are very free-spirited,” Bundy said, adding, “I had never desired [running for office], but I knew as early as 2017 that I would run for governor of Idaho.”

Bundy stated that he is not a Republican voter.

“I am not registered as a Republican on purpose because I want to make the point that I am not very happy with the Republican Party. I would never be a Democrat,” he said. “The Republican Party has not done a very good job of standing for liberty and securing people’s rights.”

Idaho's current governor is Republican Brad Little, who has faced criticism from the right for his COVID-19 restrictions. Last May, Bundy compared the "tyranny" of COVID-19 restrictions to the Holocaust, which killed 6 million Jews.

During the 41-day standoff against federal authorities at Malheur, a jury acquitted Bundy and his followers of possessing firearms in a federal facility and conspiring to obstruct federal workers. One of Bundy's men was killed in a confrontation with law enforcement.

Cliven Bundy, Cliven Bundy's father, led an armed standoff against federal officers in Nevada in 2014 over his refusal to pay rent for decades for use of public Bureau of Land Management space for his cattle, which he still hasn't paid, owing the government an estimated $1.3 million three years ago.
