(AP) — Authorities said a mountaintop cable car fell to the ground in northern Italy
on Sunday, killing at least nine people
and injuring two children
The crushed and crumpled remains of the cable car were photographed by Italy's fire department near the summit of the Mottarone peak, which overlooks Lake Maggiore.
According to Walter Milan, a spokesman for the Alpine rescue service, the cables of the ski lift were particularly high off the ground at that location, and the cause has yet to be determined.
Milan noted that the cable line was renovated in 2016 and had only recently reopened after coronavirus
lockdowns forced the closure of ski lifts throughout Italy.
Mottarone is a 4,900-foot-high mountain that overlooks a picturesque lake and the surrounding Alps of Italy's Piedmont region. It also has Alpyland, a small amusement park with a children's rollercoaster that offers 360-degree views of the scenery.
In the spring and summer, many Italian ski resorts offer mountain bike trails and hiking
