NEW DELHI — India
has set a new daily record for COVID-19
fatalities, despite a drop in infection rates.
The Health Ministry reported 4,529 deaths in the last 24 hours, bringing the total to 283,248. India also confirmed 267,334 new infections, as daily cases fell below 300,000 for the third day in a row; both figures are almost certainly undercounted.
Despite signs of a slight decrease in overall cases in India, deaths have continued to rise, and hospitals are still swamped with patients. COVID-19 fatalities in India have increased sixfold in the last month.
The number of daily vaccine doses in India has fallen by about half in the last six weeks, from a high of 4 million per day on April
2 to around 2 million or fewer this week.
With over 25 million confirmed infections, India is the second-highest caseload after the United States.
