Thousands Of People Demonstrate In Support Of Palestine In Rallies Across The United States And Around The World.

Hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets on Saturday in countries such as the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand to show solidarity with Palestinians as deadly violence in Gaza and Israel continues.

Thousands of people protested in Washington, D.C., waving Palestinian flags and holding signs that read "Free Palestine" and "Save Sheikh Jarrah," referring to a predominantly Palestinian neighborhood in East Jerusalem.

Similar protests were held in other cities across the United States, including New York City, Philadelphia, San Diego, Dallas, San Francisco, and Portland, Oregon (story continues below).

As the protests raged on Saturday, Israeli forces attacked Gaza City, destroying a 12-story building that housed offices for The Associated Press, Al Jazeera, and other media outlets. The AP said it “narrowly avoided a terrible loss of life” because the dozen or so AP journalists and freelancers who were inside the building were able to flee in time.

The Associated Press president, Gary Pruitt, said he was "shocked and horrified" that the Israeli military would "target and destroy" a building that it knew housed several news organizations.

The Israeli military defended the attack on the press building, which it claimed also housed Hamas military headquarters.

“Hamas has turned residential areas in the Gaza Strip into military strongholds,” Israel Defense Forces said in a statement. “When Hamas uses a tall building for military purposes, it becomes a lawful military target.... The Israel Defense Forces struck a number of such buildings in recent days, but we took steps to ensure that civilians were not harmed.”

The attack came after Israeli forces carried out an air raid on a city refugee camp, killing at least ten Palestinians, the majority of whom were children.

According to the White House, President Joe Biden spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu following the attacks, and expressed his concerns “about the safety and security of journalists, reinforcing the need to ensure their protection.”

Biden told Netanyahu that he supported Israel's right to defend itself against rocket attacks from the militant group Hamas and condemned attacks on Israel. Hamas launched dozens of rockets this week at Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.

According to the White House, Biden also “recognized that the current period of conflict has tragically claimed the lives of Israeli and Palestinian civilians, including children.”

According to Palestine, at least 145 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza Strip violence since Monday, including 41 children, while Israel has reported 10 deaths, including two children, according to Reuters.

Rallies in major cities around the world condemned the violence this week, including London and Cardiff in the United Kingdom, Auckland in New Zealand, Sydney in Australia, and Montreal and Toronto in Canada.
