Twitter Users Commemorate The Second Wedding Anniversary Of A Gay 'Arthur' Couple.

This week marked an important milestone in the history of animated weddings: the wedding of “Arthur” characters Mr. Rathburn and his wife, Patrick.

Although the script did not explicitly state that the ceremony involved two male characters, the episode titled "Mr. Ratburn & the Special Someone," which aired two years ago, sparked controversy.

A number of conservative pundits and right-wing organizations slammed the PBS show, and Alabama Public Television reportedly refused to air the episode.

“Arthur” creator Marc Brown expressed disappointment with the negative reactions, claiming that portraying a same-sex marriage on a children’s show was a way to make all viewers feel represented.

“Why shouldn’t their teacher marry another man? We all know gay, trans people, and it’s socially acceptable,” Brown said. “Why is there this discomfort that it makes it into our national media?”

The show marked the occasion by inviting Twitter users to send their best wishes to the happy animated couple.

It was hilarious to watch people get upset over a gay rat wedding.— 404_nowheres_not_found (@Nowheres404) May 14, 2021

I was? Huh, because I don't remember ever receiving an invitation; it must have gotten lost in the mail.— Tyler (AKA: "Robert Uppey, Jr.") (@IntrepidMegan) May 13, 2021
