Ellen Pompeo Explains Why 'Grey's Anatomy' Love Scenes Were Difficult For Her Husband At First

Ellen Pompeo recently revealed that her on-screen romance with Patrick Dempsey's character in "Grey's Anatomy" was "really hard" for her husband, Chris Ivery.

“It was about six months before I did the pilot to ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’” Pompeo said on Tuesday’s episode of the podcast “Ladies First with Laura Brown.”

“Poor guy. He had no idea what he was getting himself into,” she continued, “and I remember in the beginning it was really hard for him. He was like, ‘This is not what I signed up for. You're kissing a guy.’”

Pompeo later revealed that her husband used to say that, while he likes Dempsey in real life, seeing her "make out" with him on TV was difficult to "put up with."

“It was a lot for him at first, and he was a trooper, I have to say,” Pompeo said, adding, “He is my favorite person.”

Pompeo and Ivery married in 2007 and have three daughters: Stella, Eli, and Sienna.

The first episode of “Grey's Anatomy” was titled "A Hard Day's Night" and aired in March 2005.

Meredith Grey, played by Pompeo, was married to Derek Shepherd, aka McDreamy, played by Patrick Dempsey.

Dempsey returned to the ABC series after leaving after the 11th season to appear in the 17th season, which premiered in November.
