'They're Back': United States Women Defeat New Zealand In Olympic Soccer

That's a lot better.

On Saturday, the United States women's soccer team easily defeated New Zealand in Tokyo, likely avoiding early elimination from the tournament.

Goals were scored by Rose Lavelle, Lindsey Horan, Christen Press, and Alex Morgan, and the US won 6-1 thanks to two New Zealand own goals.

The defending World Cup champions, who are ranked first in the world, had four goals disallowed in the first half due to offsides calls, but still dominated their 22nd-ranked opponents.

The Americans put behind them their disastrous 3-0 group-opening loss to Sweden, as well as the potential embarrassment of their earliest Olympic exit.

The United States is not yet out of the woods, but it appears to be on the mend.

The team only needs a draw against Australia on Tuesday to finish second in their group and advance to the knockout round, though they could also advance as a third-place finisher.

FT USWNT 6:1 New Zealand. Solid rebound game for the US, which will need a tie or win vs Australia on Tuesday to finish second in the group (though they could still advance if they finish third.) — Grant Wahl (@GrantWahl) July 24, 2021
