Racism Is A Public Health Crisis, According To Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The mayor of Salt Lake City has signed a resolution declaring racism a public health crisis and pledging to end racist policies.

According to the American Public Health Association, Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall and the Salt Lake City Council adopted a joint resolution on Tuesday acknowledging that racism has a negative impact on the mental and physical health of communities of color.

“This is an important declaration for us as a city to make,” Mendenhall said in a statement. “Not only are we publicly acknowledging the existence of a grave inequity that many in our community have known and experienced for so long, but we are also committing ourselves to the creation of anti-racist policies and ordinances.”

According to the resolution, the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated the effects of preexisting inequalities, putting a greater burden of “disease, death, and social consequences” on Utahans of color.
