On Tuesday, top Senate Democrats
announced plans to move forward with a $3.5 trillion “human” infrastructure
bill, which they intend to pass using special budget reconciliation
rules that will allow them to avoid a Republican filibuster
The package would include a Medicare
expansion to include dental, vision, and hearing coverage, investments to combat climate change
, and additional funding for child care
and elder care for millions of Americans.
“We are very proud of this plan. We know we have a long road ahead of us. We’re going to get this done for the sake of making average Americans’ lives a whole lot better,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer
(D-NY) said after a meeting with Senate Budget Committee members on Capitol Hill
Senator Mark Warner (D-VA), a committee member, stated that the proposal would be fully funded.
It was unclear whether all 50 Democrats agreed on the $3.5 trillion top-line figure, as Democratic
leaders will need total party unity to move the bill forward under budget reconciliation rules.
