During a Fox News interview
on Tuesday, Sen. Ted Cruz
(R-Texas) displayed either a short memory or shamelessness, or both.
The Texas Republican was commenting on how Democratic
state lawmakers left Texas on Monday to deny Republicans
a quorum to vote on new election
restrictions and other contentious bills.
Cruz predicted that the Democrats
' gambit would fail because the state constitution allows for the arrest
of fleeing legislators, and he sarcastically suggested that the politicians
"getting on their private jet to fly to Washington, D.C.
,... almost certainly had to show identification to get on that jet."
The Texas Democrats who pulled this political stunt by flying
to Washington, D.C. almost certainly had to show ID to board their plane, but they're complaining because they don't want basic election integrity measures strengthened in Texas. pic.twitter.com/cHDQEMwqte — Ted Cruz (@tedcruz) July 13, 2021
The flaws in Cruz's argument were quickly pointed out on social media
"It's ironic. As they were getting on their private jet to fly to Washington DC
, they almost certainly had to show identification to get on that jet." (This is a false equivalence -- people
have the right to vote but not the right to board jets.) pic.twitter.com/VXxZ6jMBiE — Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) July 13, 2021
Many Twitter users, however, thought the real irony was that Cruz, who famously jetted off to Cancun
earlier this year while his constituents were struggling due to power outages caused by deadly winter weather
, was shaming Democrats for leaving Texas so quickly.
Man, these folks have ZERO shame or self-awareness, says the guy who fled to Cancun while Texans
were freezing to death

Consider what would have happened if they had flown to Cancun. — Erik Larson (@eelarson) July 13, 2021
Texas Democrat Julian Castro, who served as Housing
and Urban Development Secretary under President Barack Obama
, noted a significant difference between Democrats leaving the state to oppose legislation that would restrict voting access for marginalized groups and taking a tropical vacation.
Texas Democrats left to fight for voting rights
. Ted Cruz left to sip drinks on a Cancun beach. I'd sit this one out, Ted. pic.twitter.com/aaePYLLzXs — Julián Castro (@JulianCastro) July 13, 2021

It's ironic that Ted Cruz is complaining about people fleeing Texas: https://t.co/CIxfcAUOOD

After all, @tedcruz would know how to show ID to get on a plane as you flee Texas, right? https://t.co/AB478ivZzO

So, it's about as "ironic" as rain
on your wedding
