Donald Trump Defends Capitol Insurrectionists On January 6th As "Great People"

Former President Donald Trump, who has been impeached twice, praised his supporters on Sunday for storming the United States Capitol on January 6 in a violent attempt to overturn President Joe Biden's 2020 election victory.

Trump said in an interview with Fox News host Maria Bartiromo, “These were peaceful people, these were great people.”

In a reference to the events of January 6, Trump stated that “love was in the air” at his White House rally earlier that day, and falsely claimed that there was a “lovefest between the Capitol Police and the people who walked down to the Capitol.”

“They are military personnel, police officers, and construction workers,” he continued, adding, “and they are tremendous, in many cases, tremendous people.”

The Jan. 6 Capitol riot was a shocking and horrifying event, as evidenced by countless testimonials from lawmakers who fled the scene and Capitol Police officers who engaged in hand-to-hand combat with the insurrectionists. Trump supporters assaulted Capitol Police officers and hurled racist insults at them as they forced their way into the building.

Approximately 140 officers were injured in the attack, and dozens of people have been charged with using a deadly or dangerous weapon or causing serious bodily harm to an officer.

“Is this America? They beat cops with Blue Lives Matter flags, they fought us, they had Confederate flags in the U.S. Capitol,” Capitol Police officer Harry Dunn later recalled in an interview with ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

The Justice Department recently released body camera footage of the terrifying carnage faced by police officers on the steps of the United States Capitol:

Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.), one of the few Republicans who voted to impeach Trump over the Jan. 6 insurgency, urged his colleagues to speak out in response to Trump's comments on Sunday, and alluded to a phone call between Trump and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) that occurred during the attack.

“Would be nice to hear @GOPLeader McCarthy confirm that the former guy said this exact thing as it happened,” Kinzinger tweeted Sunday evening. “My fellow Republicans, SPEAK OUT NOW. History remembers.”
