DALLAS (AP) — An unopened copy of Nintendo
's Super Mario
64 sold for $1.56 million at auction.
The 1996 game was sold at Heritage Auctions in Dallas on Sunday, breaking the company's previous record for the sale of a single video game.
An inquiry about who purchased the game was not immediately answered by a spokesman.
The auction house
said in a statement that Super Mario 64 was the best-selling Nintendo 64 game and the first to feature the Mario character in 3D.
The sale comes two days after an unopened copy of Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda sold at auction for $870,000. Valarie McLeckie, Heritage's video game specialist, said the auction house was taken aback to see a game sell for more than a million dollars just two days after the Zelda game broke its previous record.
, an unopened copy of Nintendo's Super Mario Bros. purchased in 1986 and forgotten about in a desk drawer was auctioned off for $660,000 at Sotheby's.
