A cat found near the rubble of a 12-story condo building in Surfside
, that partially collapsed last month, has been reunited with her family
Binx, a black
cat, had been missing since the night of the June 24 disaster, when the apartment she shared with the Gonzalez family was split in half. Edgar Gonzalez is still missing, as are his wife
, Angela Gonzalez, and their 16-year-old daughter, Deven Gonzalez, who were both seriously injured in the collapse.
Binx was discovered by a volunteer on Thursday, four days after the rest of the block was demolished in a controlled demolition
, and was taken to the Kitty Campus animal shelter
in Miami Beach
, where she was later returned to family members.
“All we needed was a ray of hope in this tragedy,” Gina Vlasek, the founder of Kitty Campus, wrote on Facebook
was one of the most amazing days.. one of the survivors came to see the cat and to determine if it was her families cat and IT WAS!”
At a press conference held on Friday, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava
confirmed the reunion
“I am grateful that this small miracle could bring some light into the lives of a hurting family today and provide a bright spot for our entire community in the midst of this terrible tragedy,” she said.

Officials declared that the search for survivors was nearly complete on Wednesday.
