Sheriff: Maine Man Tried To Pay $200 Bail With Fake Bills

WATERBORO, Maine (AP) — According to the sheriff's office, a man in Maine attempted to post $200 bail using counterfeit bills.

Deputies responding to a report of a stolen vehicle in Waterboro early Sunday morning stopped a man walking nearby, according to a Facebook post from the York County Sheriff's Office, and determined that he was not involved but arrested him on an outstanding warrant for theft from a Walmart, according to Sheriff William King.

The man claimed to have enough money to post $200 in bail, but when the bail commissioner arrived, he attempted to pay with two fake $100 bills.

He was denied bail and was returned to jail on a forgery charge.

Later in the day, the man was able to post $100 in bail, according to the sheriff's office, and his court date is set for Aug. 4.

Court records do not indicate whether the man is represented by an attorney, and no working phone number for the man could be found.
