Elvis Costello, A Rock Icon, Defends Olivia Rodrigo Against A "brutal" Accusation.

Some people think a key riff in Olivia Rodrigo's song "Brutal" sounds too much like an Elvis Costello track, and he's perfectly fine with that.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer stated that it is something he has done personally.

“It's how rock and roll works,” Costello responded on Twitter to a fan who pointed out the similarities:

This is fine with me, Billy. It's how rock and roll works: you take the broken pieces of another thrill and build a brand new toy, which is what I did. #subterraneanhomesickblues #toomuchmonkeybusiness — Elvis Costello (@ElvisCostello) June 28, 2021

Costello's hashtags allude to the fact that his song was influenced by Bob Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues," which was influenced by Chuck Berry's "Too Much Monkey Business."

Here are the four songs, from the most recent to the oldest, each of which was once a "brand new toy":

Rodrigo's new album "Sour" debuted at number one on the Billboard charts, and she currently has two top ten and six top 50 singles on the Hot 100.

Courtney Love, a rocker, accused the 18-year-old of stealing the cover image from her 1994 Hole album, "Live Through This," which was itself a visual homage to the film "Carrie."
