A patriarchal society — and, for that matter, Hollywood
— enjoys a good catfight between two women
, but Sharon Stone
isn't about to participate in that tired game.
“To be clear: Meryl Streep
is one of the greatest actors
of all time,” Stone wrote on Twitter
on Wednesday, “but not to the exclusion of others.”

The 63-year-old “Casino” star’s tweet clarified remarks she made about Streep in a resurfaced Zoomer profile that went viral
Stone's comments appeared to some to be jealous of or snubbing the 72-year-old multi-Oscar winner.
was set up so that we should all envy and admire Meryl because only Meryl got to be the good one,” Stone explained to Zoomer. “And everyone should compete against Meryl. I think Meryl is an incredibly wonderful woman and actress, but in my opinion, quite frankly, there are other actresses equally as talented as Meryl Streep.
She then named a few female actors she believes are on par with the star of "The Devil Wears Prada
“Viola Davis is every bit the actress Meryl Streep is. Emma Thompson. Judy Davis. Olivia Colman. Kate Winslet
, for f**k's sake. But when you say Meryl, everybody falls on the floor,” she said, before including herself.
“I'm a much better villain than Meryl, and I'm sure she'd agree; Meryl was never going to be good in 'Basic Instinct' or 'Casino.'”
Some on Twitter reacted to Stone's quotes by saying she was "out there ending her own career... " or that "trashing the greatest actress in history
is pathetic." Others accused Stone of attempting to "cancel" Streep.
The larger context of Stone's comments in the profile, however, were about how Hollywood and society in general pit women against one another — and how those in the film industry use Streep's esteem against other equally talented female actors.
In some ways, reading some of the comments rallying against Stone in favor of Streep demonstrates her point.
