After the "Toxic" singer's shocking allegations about her conservatorship
, Justin Timberlake
repeatedly expressed his support for ex-girlfriend Britney Spears
Timberlake expressed his and wife Jessica Biel's love and "absolute support to Britney during this time" in a series of tweets.
“Regardless of our past, good or bad, and regardless of how long ago it was... what’s happening to her is just not right,” Timberlake continued.
Spears accused her conservators, including her father Jamie, of forcing her to take lithium to the point where she felt drunk and forcing her to perform when she didn't want to during a court hearing
The 39-year-old pop star testified via video link that she was denied access to a doctor in order to have her birth-control device removed so she could have another child
Timberlake added, "No woman should ever be denied the right to make decisions about her own body
Spears claimed that her handlers' control over her has been traumatizing and abusive, implying that she is imprisoned in her own life.
“No one should EVER be held against their will... or have to beg permission to access everything they’ve worked so hard for,” Timberlake wrote.
“We hope that the courts and her family
make this right and allow her to live her life as she sees fit.”
Spears has been in conservatorship since 2008, following mental health
Timberlake and Spears famously dated from 1999 to 2002 while co-stars on Disney
's "Mickey Mouse Club."
An apologetic Timberlake said earlier this year that he had "failed" to support Spears after a new documentary
, "Framing Britney Spears," depicted him as lacking compassion, and Spears' fans
resented his "Cry Me A River" music video
, which many believe accused Spears of cheating on him and cast her as the villain in the relationship.
In a 2003 interview
, Spears stated, "I think everyone has a side of their story that makes them feel a certain way."
We should all be supporting Britney at this time, regardless of our past, good or bad, and no matter how long ago it was... what is happening to her is just not right. No woman should ever be restricted from making decisions about her own body. — Justin Timberlake (@jtimberlake) June 24, 2021
