does not want the Tokyo Olympics
The host of HBO
's "Last Week Tonight
" made the case for canceling the games due to the COVID-19 pandemic
on Sunday, noting that the virus is still very much in control in Japan
, with daily death
rates higher than when the games were originally postponed last year, and vaccination
rates remain in the single digits.
“I don’t know what the target percentage should be to safely host the Olympics,” Oliver says in the video below, “but I’m pretty sure it should be higher than the number of entries in the ‘Fast & Furious’ franchise right now.”
Oliver also criticized the International Olympic Committee
for having sole authority to cancel the event, leaving Japan somewhat powerless despite protests.
Oliver compared the situation to trying to reschedule a sick child
's birthday party only to be overruled by the clown
Adopting the clown's voice, the comedian
retorted, "Hey, I don't care if you've got the bubonic fucking plague; you're on Bozo's clock from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., bitch."
The host cited reports that Japan has already spent at least $15 billion, if not more, on preparations for the games, and he couldn't help but think that money
was the "main motivator" for continuing with the plans.
“It's not like Japan needs the Olympics to boost tourism,” he said, exclaiming, "It's Japan!"
The competition begins on July 23.
