LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Los Angeles dentist
was charged on Monday with sexually abusing nine women
Emad Fathy Moawad, 50, was charged with a slew of counts of sexual battery by restraint and other forceful acts.
Moawad appeared in court Monday but did not enter a plea, so his arraignment was continued; he was jailed on nearly $2 million bail, and it was unclear whether he had an attorney present to speak on his behalf.
“This case is especially troubling because the victims are low-income people
and immigrants who are less likely to report crimes due to fear,” said Los Angeles County District Attorney
George Gascón in a statement.
Prosecutors claim that Moawad molested women aged 27 to 73 between 2013 and 2018.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Moawad was sued in 2019 by a woman who claimed that Moawad molested her while she was under anesthesia in 2017, and that she reported the allegations to police
According to the lawsuit
, Moawad repeatedly fondled her, in one case holding her down until she managed to flee the room, and the attacks ended in December 2018 when a dental assistant recorded a video of one of the assaults, as reported by the New York Times
