had one of the most difficult jobs
in show business
: keeping Chris Farley
sober (see video below).
Last week, the former "Roseanne" star revealed to Howard Stern
that "Saturday Night Live
" producer Lorne Michaels approached him about assisting Farley, the magnetic "SNL
who was losing his battle with substance abuse.
“He wanted to be sober, and I think Lorne was very concerned about that, so I was his sponsor for a few years,” Arnold explained.
Arnold quickly discovered that Farley "liked to have fun and he had too much fun. Very sad when he died," estimating that Farley was already on his 17th rehab stint.
Stern expressed his frustration with Farley's inability to "abuse himself."
“It’s also frustrating because at times he'd say, 'I'm not going to be around Tom because I don't want him to see,'” Arnold explained.
“You can’t be fat and do drugs, you just can’t. You gotta pick one, I can speak from experience,” the “True Lies
” star said to Farley.
Arnold and the “Tommy Boy” actor became close enough that Farley served as best man at Arnold’s wedding to Julie Lynn Champnella in 1995. The bachelor
party went off the rails when Farley walked on stage naked
at the famous Scores strip club.
“He was naked a lot,” Arnold admitted, “and he had no shame in his game.”
Farley died from a drug overdose in December 1997, at the age of 33.
