's father, Thomas Markle
, has spoken out once more in an apparent attempt to reconcile with his estranged daughter and son-in-law, Prince Harry
Markle, who said he hasn't spoken to his daughter since two days before her royal wedding to Harry in May 2018, told Australia
's "60 Minutes" in a segment aired on Sunday that he hopes to meet his newest grandchild, Lilibet
"Lili" Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, who arrived earlier this month.
Markle told the TV show that he received "no phone calls" about Lili's birth and found out about it "on the radio."
“Lili is a perfect name, and the other thing that makes me happy is that now there is a lot more Markle blood in the royal family
,” Markle said, adding, “All I can say is that I hope I get to see these grandchildren of mine eventually, sometime because I’m a pretty good grandpa.”
Lili is the couple's 2-year-old firstborn child, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor
, whom Thomas has never met.
The feud between Markle and his royal family members began in the run-up to the wedding, when he was photographed in staged paparazzi photos
reading books about England
, and it was later revealed that he had been receiving money
from the same tabloid that had harassed Meghan for years.
Meghan revealed to Oprah Winfrey
earlier this year that her father lied to her when she confronted him, and she is unable to reconcile this.
“I genuinely can't imagine doing anything to intentionally cause pain to my child; I can't imagine it,” the Duchess of Sussex
said in a shocking interview
with Winfrey in March.
Thomas Markle told "60 Minutes" that he "made one dumb mistake and I'll never be forgiven for it" in this situation.
“There’s no compassion for me,” he said, adding that even ax murderers in prison
have family members visit them, whereas he does not. He went on to say he misses his daughter and is “certainly hurt by a lot of it.”
Winfrey was also accused of "taking advantage" of both Meghan and Harry, according to Markle.
Meghan revealed that she had suicidal thoughts during her time as a royal in that explosive interview.
“The only person who benefits from this is Oprah Winfrey,” Markle said of the interview, claiming Winfrey is exploiting the couple and “pushing it to get more and more out of it.”
Despite this, Markle has stated that he will "never give up hope" for a reconciliation.
