If there was any doubt about Donald Trump
's allegiances, they remain with Russian President Vladimir Putin
On Thursday, the former president issued a typically vehement statement about his relationship with Putin and President Joe Biden
's upcoming meeting with the Russian leader.
In the statement, Trump recalled fondly the 2018 Helsinki summit, where he famously refused to blame Putin for Moscow
's meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential election
, and made a snide remark about Biden falling asleep during his own summit.

Many Twitter users were unsurprised by Trump's expression of sympathy.
I rarely tweet out the deranged ramblings of the Republicans' Dear Leader, but this love letter from the Republican Party
to Russia's Putin is worth seeing. It is a healthy mix of disloyal to the US and just pathetic. https://t.co/SvmCLAGXyc

He has a nickname for everyone, but "President Putin" and "President Xi" are his favorites. https://t.co/aCOBo3DvuV

Trump is still groveling and kowtowing to Putin. Kompromat works, people
. Can't wait to find out what Putin has on him. (It has to be more than pee-pee tape.) https://t.co/VVA4azOGnG
