Cicadas Have Grounded The White House Press Plane

Journalists who were scheduled to accompany Joe Biden on his first overseas trip as president were delayed on their outbound flight to England on Tuesday night due to cicadas.

According to The New York Times, a swarm of the noisy flying insects, part of the billions-strong Brood X that appears across the United States every 17 years, filled the engines of the White House press plane as it was landing at Dulles International Airport.

The pilots were forced to return the plane to the airport.

Delta Air Lines spokesperson told The Washington Post that the insects were to blame for the delay.

According to CNN, a different plane will depart early Wednesday morning, when Biden will also depart on Air Force One.

Biden will be out of the country for the next eight days.

In England, he'll attend the G7 summit in St. Ives, Cornwall, before paying a visit to Queen Elizabeth II at Windsor Castle.

Later in the day, Biden will meet with NATO and European Union leaders in Brussels, Belgium, before meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Geneva, Switzerland.
