, recently dubbed the “sexiest woman alive
,” topped Maxim
’s 2021 “Hot 100” list, becoming the publication’s first Black woman to do so.
On Monday, the singer, actor, and dancer posted on Instagram
, "Somebody pinch me!!!!!"
“WOW.... Stepping back in front of the lens has been a journey of self-reflection and self-confidence,” she wrote in the caption of the post, adding, “Living up to [the] name and title of this shoot wholeheartedly made me nervous.”
Taylor, who has two daughters with her husband, professional basketball
player Iman Shumpert, later admitted in the post that her hectic schedule often leaves her with little time to "feel sexy."
She said she arrived at the photo shoot after dropping her 5-year-old daughter, Junie, off at school, and that the sweatpants and beanie she was wearing were featured in the shoot.
“Embrace and love yourself for who [and] what you are because only the purest heart shines through,” she continued later.
Jimmy Neutch- Shumpert (@teyanataylor) shared this post on Instagram.
Taylor was named the “Hot 100” cover star by Maxim on Monday, praising her as a “graceful choreographer-dancer, actor-director, and top ten recording star.” She is the first Black woman to top the list, according to a database of past honorees dating
back to 2000.
Olivia Culpo, Kate Upton, and Hailey Baldwin were among the most recent honorees in 2019.
When Lindsay Lohan
topped the list in 2007, the magazine told The Associated Press
that its editors determined the rankings, which included buzz and beauty for women
in film, TV, music
, and fashion.
“There is no other star in the world (who) causes more of a stir in the public eye than Lindsay,” said Jimmy Jellinek, the editor-in-chief of Maxim at the time.
In 2018, the magazine stated that its list honored women who are "multi-hyphenates, entrepreneurs, and risk-takers," as well as those who are "physically beautiful."
“Now, more than ever, we need to celebrate smart, powerful women who are breaking boundaries (and looking damn good while doing so,” the organization said in a statement.
On social media
this week, people
wondered why a Black woman hadn't previously topped the list.
That fact was described as "pathetic" by Jemele Hill, a contributing writer
for the Atlantic, and others on Twitter
I had the same reaction: great for Teyana Taylor, but terrible for Maxim. https://t.co/l85qyKy3xg

thing is, I had no idea Maxim still existed; apparently, they had no idea either. — Rodney Carmichael (@rodneyology) June 8, 2021
I'm glad @MaximMag finally caught up with the rest of the world because Black women have been gorgeous for a very long time. https://t.co/IbWKXroxd7

Taylor revealed in Maxim's cover story that she had long wished to be the magazine's cover star.
“I’ve followed Maxim for a long time and I’ve always felt like I should be on the cover,” she explained, “so getting the call saying they want me on the cover really meant a lot. I was like, ‘What? They want me on the cover? Okay!’”
Taylor most recently appeared in “Coming 2 America,” the 2021 sequel to the original 1988 classic “Coming to America,” which starred Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall, James Earl Jones, and Sharlena Headley.
The singer is working on a number of projects, including her latest album, "The Album," which was released last year.
Taylor and Shumpert, who welcomed their second child
, Rue Rose, in September, will star in the upcoming E! reality series "We Got Love Teyana & Iman."
She also revealed to Maxim that she is working on a series based on music legend Dionne Warwick.
“I want to make sure she approves everything and is comfortable with everything before we move forward,” she said of the “Walk on By” singer, adding, “That was the most important thing for me, to really learn each other and know what it is that she wants, and make sure her story is coming from her own mouth, rather than bringing people in to change her narrative
