Allen West, The Chair Of The Texas Republican Party, Is Stepping Down.

Allen West, the chairman of the Texas Republican Party, resigned on Friday, opening the door to a statewide run.

West stated in a news release from the Texas Republican Party that it was his "distinctive honor" to serve in the position for just under a year, and that his resignation will take effect on July 11.

The party's news release touts West's support for Texas' "heartbeat bill," or extreme anti-abortion legislation that effectively bans abortion after six weeks.

West has been rumored to run for statewide office in Texas, possibly for governor or Congress.

In a previously scheduled press conference on Friday, West stated that “so many people have asked me to consider something,” and that he would look into “possibly even congressional, cuz I do live in Texas [district] 32, and there’s a guy in Texas-32 that I really don’t care for being my congressional representative.” Democratic Rep. Colin Allred currently represents the district.

West also told a radio host earlier Friday that it was "safe" to assume he was thinking about running for governor. West has been a frequent critic of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R), who is running for a third term in 2022 and has received the endorsement of former President Donald Trump.

According to the Texas Tribune, West, as Republican Party chair, protested outside the governor's mansion over COVID-19 shutdowns and sued Abbott for extending early voting due to the pandemic.

West, who grew up in Georgia and served as a lieutenant colonel in the Army, was best known in the early 2010s as a Tea Party-backed congressman in Florida, where he made numerous Islamophobic statements.

In terms of who will succeed West as Texas GOP chair, current vice chair Cat Parks "will be having conversations with her family" about a possible run, according to her spokesperson, while former GOP state Rep. Matt Rinaldi has already declared his candidacy.
