's Don Lemon
suggested on Thursday that the media should abandon the "very small, tiny, unhappy" Donald Trump
, whom he described as a "lounge act."
“I just wonder if we exaggerate it, if we give it too much of a voice, because Donald Trump right now is the Wizard of Oz,” Lemon, who frequently covers the ex-president on his prime time show, told “New Day
” anchors Brianna Keilar
and John Berman.
“He’s the man behind the curtain, and he really doesn’t have any power,” Lemon continued. “His power comes from us, because we keep promoting him and talking about this, even though we should probably ignore a lot of it.”
I'm glad @donlemon said this on @CNN today. We in the media cover Donald Trump far too much. Yes, he's a former president who says dangerous things that frequently need to be corrected, but beyond that, we need to stop covering him and move on. pic.twitter.com/iXMxPlMLt9 — Keith Boykin (@keithboykin) June 3, 2021
Lemon noted how Trump was kicked off social media
platforms after inciting the deadly U.S. Capitol riot
, and how he has now shut down his overhyped but ultimately underwhelming blog
“I believe you can call people
out, expose them, but you don’t have to keep talking about it every day,” he added.
“Perhaps we should let him be and have that majority of a minority,” Lemon pondered, hoping that Trump’s supporters, who continue to push his election
lies — and believe his wild expectation of being reinstated as president over the summer — will soon realize they must return to reality.
“He’s a very small, tiny, unhappy man who is living in a delusion
and acting like a lounge act,” Lemon said, mocking Trump’s sporadic appearances and speeches at weddings
at his private Mar-a-Lago
club in Palm Beach, Florida
He joked that it was "his only outlet for spreading misinformation
“Leave him alone, let him have it.”
