Former President George W. Bush's chief ethics lawyer, Richard Painter
, said retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn
's call for a Myanmar-style coup in the United States
Painter told CNN
's Ana Cabrera on Tuesday that Flynn should be court-martialed for violating the Uniform Code of Military
Justice with his broader pattern of comments advocating for a military takeover of America.
Painter declared, "This is sedition."
“It is extremely dangerous for a former general to call for a military coup,” he added, adding that “this cannot be accepted in the United States of America.”
Flynn told a conference of supporters of the deranged QAnon conspiracy theory
on Saturday that a coup, similar to the one that killed scores of protesters in Myanmar, "should happen" in the United States.
Later, he attempted to retract the remark, claiming that "there is no reason whatsoever for any coup in America."
Given Flynn's previous pitch to Trump of martial law, Painter wasn't buying the backtrack.
Painter stated that Flynn “understands that he has crossed the line into criminal conduct under both the sedition statute and the Uniform Code of Military Justice.”
Flynn was Donald Trump
's national security
adviser for only 22 days before he was embroiled in a scandal, later pleading guilty to lying to federal agents about his dealings with Russia
. Trump pardoned Flynn shortly after he was fired in November 2020.
