'Genuine Danger Here': NYT Columnist Warns People Are Being Lulled Into False Security
Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times feature writer Thomas Friedman on Monday cautioned of "chilling" advancements inside the GOP that may have disastrous ramifications for the country.
"We are in genuine peril here," Friedman revealed to CNN's Anderson Cooper.
Friedman said Republicans are blending around ex-President Donald Trump's lies about the political race while the vast majority are being "quieted" into bogus security in view of President Joe Biden's lower-key capability and spotlight on the Covid pandemic.
Yet, "our majority rule government is as compromised today" as it was when Trump proclaimed his aim to pursue position, said Friedman, taking note of how most Republicans have fallen in sync with Trump's 2020 political race lies. Conspicuous holdouts Sen. Glove Romney (R-Utah) and Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) are the exemptions for the new Republican standard, he noted.
"Buying in to the large untruth that this political race was taken has become an essential now for flourishing, enduring and ascending in this Republican Party," said Friedman. "What's the significance here? It implies that this GOP will be based on a huge falsehood."
He asked how individuals might actually believe an ideological group if its establishment was outlandishly asserting the 2020 vote was taken.
"It's happened like over the most recent few weeks, where everybody conformed and individuals like (House Minority Leader) Kevin McCarthy ― their readiness to politically prostitute themselves to, you know, get the speaker of the House ― it is amazing that somebody would sell their spirit that boldly," said Friedman.
"It's simply chilling," he added. "Presently, envision, on the off chance that he would do that, what will they do once they're in ability to keep control? We are in genuine peril here."
